The Queensland Government announced on 21 May 2023, that it was considering expanding the current fee-free kindy model to all Queensland families.

Currently 14,000 children already receive access to a kindergarten program for free, and another 26,000 receive it at a subsidised rate, as a result of a targeted financial support program for low-to middle income families.

In Queensland, ‘kindy’ is considered the year before Prep and regarded as a significant evidence-informed protective factor in improving developmental outcomes and predispositions to learning for children.

The new proposal is to expand free kindy access to all Queensland families.

A short period of public consultation is underway to seek feedback on the proposal.

Families are encouraged to have their say via this link.
